New York Rangers Make Splash in NHL Free Agency

The New York Rangers made a flurry of roster additions, completing seven transactions in less than five hours.

They added seven new players, including forwards Oliver Bjorkstrand, Cole Beaudoin, and Joe Veleno.

What happened?

The Rangers traded for backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo and flipped defenseman Will Borgen to the Boston Bruins for two draft picks.

They also acquired defensemen Sean Durzi, Marcus Pettersson, and Marc Del Gaizo.

Why it matters for New York Rangers

The team is now in a better place in terms of NHL competitiveness and depth of young talent, but problems that required extreme offseason surgery were largely self-inflicted.

The Rangers are currently 16th in the Eastern Conference with a 34-39 record, on a W1 streak.

What comes next?

The Rangers will look to add more firepower up front before the summer is through, possibly with another trade or signing.

And with the addition of Pettersson and Durzi, the D corps is decidedly improved.

The likelihood of Braden Schneider sticking around has increased, following New York's decision to move on from Borgen.

Petterson enjoyed the best years of his career during his seven seasons in Pittsburgh with current Rangers coach Mike Sullivan.

The Rangers already lacked firepower and have even less now, but they're trending in a younger direction.

So, the team will take its time with Alberts Šmits, who is expected to sign his entry-level contract this summer.

The Rangers made their splashiest trade of the offseason to date by acquiring Pavel Dorofeyev and signing the 25-year-old goal-scorer to a seven-year, $77 million extension.

But they finished with a flurry, adding seven new players and three draft picks.

The team's forward group is better with Dorofeyev and likely Bjorkstrand in the top six.

The Rangers will raise the floor of the defense with the additions of Pettersson and Durzi, if healthy.
