New York Rangers Make Bold Trade: NHL Execs Question Trocheck Return

New York Rangers traded Vincent Trocheck for Sean Durzi, Cole Beaudoin—and NHL execs are baffled

The New York Rangers shocked the NHL with their Trocheck trade return, swapping the veteran winger for defenseman Sean Durzi, forward prospect Cole Beaudoin, and a 2027 third-round pick. NHL execs, however, are questioning whether this move truly helps a team currently 16th in the Eastern Conference, 34-39 on a W1 streak, as they rebuild for another playoff run.

Why did the New York Rangers make this trade?

The Rangers acquired Pavel Dorofeyev earlier this offseason to boost scoring, but the Trocheck deal—completed for Durzi, Beaudoin, and a future pick—left scouts scratching their heads. One NHL scout told The Athletic they could’ve secured a first-round pick at the deadline instead. Another called the return ‘fine’ but admitted the Rangers likely left money on the table.

What are NHL execs saying about the New York Rangers’ return?

Doubts center on Beaudoin, a 21-year-old forward whose skating has been flagged as a major concern. One exec described him as a ‘fourth-liner at best,’ while another wondered if he’ll ever crack the NHL. Durzi, a steady defenseman, may help, but the lack of guaranteed upside in the package has some questioning the logic.

GM Chris Drury defends the New York Rangers’ moves

Despite the criticism, GM Chris Drury remains confident. He called the additions ‘real good players’ and emphasized plugging roster holes—including Beaudoin’s arrival and the Liam Greentree trade from the Kings. ‘We’re excited about these pieces,’ Drury said, noting the team now has more draft picks and prospects to work with.

New York Rangers’ full offseason moves—what else changed?

Beyond the Trocheck deal, the Rangers made several key moves:

- Traded Pavel Dorofeyev to Vegas for a 2026 first-round pick (Dallas, No. 26), a 2026 third (Buffalo, No. 92), and a conditional 2028 first.

- Signed Joe Veleno to a $1.2M one-year deal.

- Signed Oliver Bjorkstrand to a $4.5M one-year pact.

- Acquired Joonas Korpisalo from the Bruins for Kalle Väisänen and a 2028 fourth.

- Traded William Borgen to Boston for a 2027 second and a conditional 2028 third.

- Acquired Marcus Pettersson from Vancouver for a conditional 2030 first.

With just under $8M in cap space, the Rangers are betting on youth and picks to climb back into contention.
